Since its establishment in 2013, the East Coast Environmental Research Institute (ESERI), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) has served as a reference centre in the fields of Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, and Applied Science. The institute has also developed expertise in environmental forensics, water treatment, and disaster management, particularly in addressing flood risks and environmental challenges in the East Coast region.

In addition to these core areas, ESERI remains actively involved in atmospheric research, including astronomy (falak) and astrophysics. To date, ESERI has successfully produced more than 50 postgraduate graduates from various countries, many of whom now serve as senior officers and researchers at the international level.

In line with the advancement of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0), ESERI focuses its research on environmental analytics, data science, visualisation, and quantitative instrumentation. The institute is also actively engaged in fundamental research, technology development, innovation product creation, research commercialisation, and provides consultancy services to industry and government agencies.

ESERI remains committed to contributing towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 through high impact research and strategic collaborations. Our aspiration is to become a leading reference centre in environmental and disaster-related research in the region, while serving as a catalyst for the development of sustainable, knowledge-based communities.
